讲座题目(Title):How to write a book review for academic journals
讲座摘要(Abstract):
Writing a book review is a good entry point into academic journals for early career researchers and an important contribution to the field for more experienced scholars. Book reviews allow others to get a better understanding of the content and quality of a book before making the financial commitment to buy it. Moreover, well written reviews promote the work of professional colleagues, advance matters of interest to the field, and offer an organized, concise, and well-supported analysis of the major contributions and insights of the volume. This talk will cover the major elements of writing a book review from start to finish, including:
getting started
reviewingin one’s own voice
balancing critical analysis and commendation (or at least courtesy)
supporting one’s critiques and opinions
offering recommendations
ensuring it is an analysis, not a summary (the #1 reason for rejection)
Writing a book review can be a rewarding experience; it can allow one’s voice to be heard on a topic, act as a network builder for connecting with others working in a subject area, and even improve future volumes. It has been my pleasure serving as Book Reviews Editor forSystemjournal for the past four years and I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned with you.
