讲座题目(Title):The dark and the light side of the force: Negative and positive emotions in L2 learning and teaching
讲座摘要(Abstract):
Just like any other activity that human beings engage in, the process of learning a foreign or second language (L2) involves a wide spectrum of emotions, ranging from those commonly seen as negative, such as anxiety, boredom or shame, to those are generally perceived as positive, such as enjoyment, love or curiosity. The talk offers a critical overview of empirical investigations undertaken thus far that have focused on both sets of emotions in various learning environments (i.e., traditional vs. virtual; formal vs. informal; e.g., Dewaele & Dewaele, 2020; Elahi Shirvan & Talebzadeh, 2018; Kruk, 2021; Li, 2021; Li, Dewaele, & Jiang, 2020; Pawlak, Kruk, & Zawodniak, 2020; Zawodniak & Kruk, 2019; Yin, Dewaele, & MacIntyre, 2021), both in terms of their foci and methodological issues. This overview serves as a basis for pedagogical recommendations, the most important of which is that both positive and negative emotions should be taken into account in L2 instruction. However, it is emphasized as well that utmost care should be taken when trying to intervene in the emotions manifested by learners and that there exists a close link between emotions experienced by learners and their teachers. Some suggestions for future research are also provided.
